If Only I were King

If Only I were King

Oh what if I were a King to sit upon a thrown
to survey the world and count the vast riches that I own.
What if I could sit in a gilded carriage by four horses drawn and travel to my coronation
and be worshiped by my subjects, allegiance they have sworn,

Surrounded by leaders of the world, royalty, presidents, and I above them all,
One person that I am and ten thousand servants, troops, at my beck and call.
To the cathedral great with majestic pomp and ceremony, I go, millions gasp in awe,
when they see that I am just a person, like them,
complete with sins, mistakes and many human flaws.

How silly do I feel to sit as God upon a golden throne, Bugles blast, organs whine and
The bishop prays as I claim that Scotland is my home.
I sit on top of their once mighty stone their destiny which I now rule,
They allow me to be their triumphant king and bow their heads, before me, a silly fool.

Then the ceremony begins I feel the glamor and the power,
Oh it’s great to be the center of attention like a precious super flower.
The only one above me is the person with the crown, the archbishop puts it on my head and says,
“I make you king, be grateful and don’t smirk and don’t frown”.
Looking kingly I swagger with the pomp, I love the glitter, the adulation and the gold,
I don’t really know why I’m here, a mortal person, going bald and growing old.

I love the walkabout when people bow before me
and say in breathless tones they met the king,
They touched my sacred hand, they bowed and kissed my ring.

Then after all is done, like all you people to the bathroom I must go,
sitting there I realize the final truth,
It is just a political farce to placate the people and keep them from the loot.

I am no one special it’s just a pretty glorious show, to keep the people believing
in a system they hardly know.
To the palace I must now depart and and be a prisoner of the minders day and night,
Never from the strict routine must I divert but obey the rules, never out of sight.

I the King, have everything you might think,
but freedom none and in the glare of media
I can flounder and I will sink.
So off with this stupid crown, the symbol of fake triumphant and kingly power,
I throw aside the ermine robe, I want to be a human and take a long hot shower.
