13 Convicts on Death Row are over 70 yrs old, say Lawyers

AT least 13 of the 981 men now on death row are more than 70 years old and should have been given the lighter sentence of reclusion perpetual the Free Legal Assistant Group (Flag) said yesterday.

Maria Socono Diokno, Flag secretary general, noted that the elderly inmates, mostly convicted rapists, have been languishing at the maximum security compound of the New Bilibid Prisons awaiting the Supreme Court’s review of their cases.

Vatican Lauds Moratorium on RP Executions

WHERE there used to be only death and persecution, lights were turned on last week to celebrate the moratorium on executions in the Philippines.

The Vatican’on Saturday lighted up the ancient Roman Colosseum as a message that Philippine government leaders have been enlightened to respect the value of human life, according to Manila Auxiliary Bishop Teodoro Bacani.

8 doomed convicts spared

EIGHT convicts were spared the lethal injection when the Supreme Court commuted their sentences to reclusion perpetua, a jail term, of 40 years or less.

Of the eight, a father who raped his daughter four times and a guardian who raped his ward “a hundred times” escaped execution because of the prosecution’s failure to cite the father-daughter and guardian-ward relationship on the charge sheet.

DAVAO CITY – Children’s rights advocates here expressed alarm over several unresolved summary executions of teenagers and young adults suspected of theft and other petty crimes.

Data compiled by the tambaya Center, a private institution for abused children, showed that at least 13 children and young adults with ages ranging from 16 to 25 were summarily executed from February 1999 to October this year.
