Slavery levels in UK ‘higher than thought’
There could be between 10,000 and 13,000 victims of slavery in the UK, far more than previous estimates, analysis for the Home Office suggests.
Modern slavery victims are said to include women forced into prostitution, “imprisoned” domestic staff and workers in fields, factories and fishing boats.
The figure for 2013 is the first time the government has made an official estimate of the scale of the problem.
The Home Office has launched a strategy to help tackle slavery.

602 children in sex slavery in UK. Rise

Rise in UK trafficking, slavery and exploitation.
The number of people trafficked for slavery or other exploitation in the UK has risen sharply to more than 2,700, the National Crime Agency (NCA) says.

The rise includes people lured to the country after meeting people via online dating or job recruitment sites.

Romania remains the most likely country of origin for victims, followed by Poland and the UK.The NCA says trafficking does not have to involve crossing international borders.

"I will show you no Mercy" Judge says. Seven convicted for child rape.

Seven men who were in a gang which raped and abused girls in Bristol UK have been jailed for up to 11 years.

Four teenage girls were abused by the men, who are of Somali heritage, Bristol Crown Court was told.

Victims were told it was part of the men’s “culture and tradition” and “men always have sex with each other’s girlfriends”.

Almost 36m people live in modern slavery – report

Nearly 36 million people worldwide, or 0.5% of the world’s population, live as slaves, a survey by anti-slavery campaign group Walk Free says.
The group’s Global Slavery Index says India has the most slaves overall and Mauritania has the highest percentage.

The total is 20% higher than for 2013 because of better methodology.
The report defines slaves as people subject to forced labour, debt bondage, trafficking, sexual exploitation for money and forced or servile marriage.
