Francis Jardeleza declares a net worth of P244.41 million in 2014, dislodging Justice Mariano del Castillo as the ‘richest’ in the Supreme Court

MANILA, Philippines – The newest Supreme Court justice is the judiciary’s richest in 2014.

Based on the Statement of Assets, Liabilities, and Net Worth (SALN) summary report obtained by Rappler from the Supreme Court, Justice Francis Jardeleza declared a net worth of P244.41 million in 2014, making him the richest among the SC justices.

This is the first annual SALN declaration of Jardeleza as SC justice, following his appointment in August 2014.

Justice Mariano del Castillo, former “richest” SC justice, now ranks second after declaring a net worth of P130.91 million. He used to have the highest net worth among SC justices since 2011.

Meanwhile, Supreme Court Chief Justice Maria Lourdes Sereno and 10 other justices became richer in 2014. More than half of all SC justices declared an increase of up to almost 20% in their latest net worth.

Justice Teresita Leonardo-De Castro reported the highest percentage increase, with a 19.49% increase from P10.42 million in 2013 to P12.45 million in 2014.

Only 3 justices – Justices Antonio Carpio, Lucas Bersamin, and Bienvenido Reyes – declared a drop in their latest net worth.

The Supreme Court began releasing the justices’ SALNs in 2012 following the impeachment of former chief justice Renato Corona. Apart from the SALN, the SC also allowed the disclosure of the justices’ credentials and personal data sheets.
