INDIA: Working Children Face Slave-Like Conditions

Of the 20 million children estimated to be working in India, close to half are illegally employed as domestic servants, including some as young as 6, the London Independent reports. Despite attempts to correct the situation, the problem is worsening, welfare organizations say.

Many of the children have been subject to abuse, harassment, forced prostitution, rape and torture. They have little legal recourse, though, because India’s Juvenile Justice Act, intended to protect young workers, does not cover children under 14, because their employment is illegal.
