The finding of a camp believed to be for human trafficking purposes at the Mata Air Forest Reserve, Perlis, as reported on the front page of a newspaper yesterday is not a new finding.

Perlis police chief SAC Shafie Ismail said the emplacement in Bukit Genting Perah, Wang Kelian, was one of the 28 emplacements mentioned by Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar in a media conference at Martek Op Wawasan Khas, Wang Kelian, on May 25.

“The media present has been given a comprehensive picture on the emplacements which are found via photos which were exhibited at the picture gallery of the base.

“The article had invited numerous reactions, specifically the allegation on the existence of a camp for sexual abuse, only with the finding of a brassiere and women’s inner garments. It is not accurate to make such speculations without firm evidence,” he said in a statement here.
Shafie said indeed a separate hut did exist at the camp to house men and women.

In addition, he said the statement on the existence of a small clinic was also extreme because an existing hut only supplied basic medicines for treating light ailments.

He said a large generator which was buried purported to silence its noise was very confusing because it could not function without space and adequate airing.
He clarified that the police had dug out 20 skeletons from the emplacement on June 6.

“There is no finding of a new camp to date and the figure remains at 28 emplacements as stated by the Inspector-General of Police previously,” he added. – Bernama, June 16, 2015.
