STATEMENT OF THE CLERGY AGAINST THE BARRICADES

DIOCESE
OF IBA
VICARIATE OF OLONGAPO
MANIFESTO OF SOLIDARITY
WITH SUBIC BAY FREEPORT WORKERS
LET US ALL TAKE ACTION NOW
We, the religious leaders of the Catholic Church in Olongapo City, hereby express our solidarity with workers who have been barred from work because of the barricades set up at the gates of the Subic Bay Freeport. We heed the complaints of the workers who were compromised for the political gains of one family.
We denounce in the strongest possible terms the perpetuation of such destructive and maneuvering by Olongapo City officials. We condemn the blockade especially of ordinary workers of the Freeport as a violation of their inherent human rights and also as a form of economic oppression of the working class in our society.
We further condemn this senseless ploy to create chaos at the Freeport that spared neither the students of Freeport schools nor neighboring educational institutions. There is no excuse for sacrificing the education of the students to further the selfish agenda of the reigning politicos.
We therefore call on President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo and everyone to help us defend the rights of workers and preserve the peace and order of our society.
