Letter to Mary
Robinson
High Commissioner for Human Rights Switzerland |
Weimar 26th March, 2001 | ||
Dear Mrs. Robinson,
The City of Weimar presents a Human Rights Award annually since 1995. With
this award human rights workers are honored who are acutely in danger to life
and limb and/or are severely hindered in their work for the protection of human
rights all over the world.
It is with great concern that we notice that those presented with the Human
Rights Award of the City of Weimar, too, are increasingly subjected to growing
reprisals (e.g. in Congo, Colombia, Philippines).
This is especially true of Father Shay Cullen, who was honored with the Human Rights Award of the City of Weimar 2000. He and his co-workers at the Preda Foundation, Olongapo City, have been harassed and threatened, their human rights violated. Those protecting sexually abused and exploited children are at grave risk from death squads, child abusers and harassment de jure.
Many others defending human rights find themselves in the same situation.
As the Lord Mayor of the City of Weimar I urge you to take determined action to
persuade all governments, especially the Philippine government, to act on behalf
of the Defenders of Human Rights and implement Article 12.2 of the UN Paris
Declaration of 1998.
Respectfully
sgd. Germer
Dr. Volkhardt Germer
Lord Mayor
