Catholic Church in Australia links celibacy to child abuse

The Catholic Church in Australia on Friday said that obligatory celibacy may have contributed to priests abusing children, and recommended that clergy should be given “psychosexual” training.

In a landmark report, an Australian Catholic Church body dealing with the legacy of child sex abuse added that some church institutions and their leaders turned a blind eye to what was going on for years.

“Obligatory celibacy may also have contributed to abuse in some circumstances,” the Truth, Justice and Healing Council said.

Slavery levels in UK ‘higher than thought’
There could be between 10,000 and 13,000 victims of slavery in the UK, far more than previous estimates, analysis for the Home Office suggests.
Modern slavery victims are said to include women forced into prostitution, “imprisoned” domestic staff and workers in fields, factories and fishing boats.
The figure for 2013 is the first time the government has made an official estimate of the scale of the problem.
The Home Office has launched a strategy to help tackle slavery.

Rise in UK trafficking, slavery and exploitation.
The number of people trafficked for slavery or other exploitation in the UK has risen sharply to more than 2,700, the National Crime Agency (NCA) says.

The rise includes people lured to the country after meeting people via online dating or job recruitment sites.

Romania remains the most likely country of origin for victims, followed by Poland and the UK.The NCA says trafficking does not have to involve crossing international borders.

Seven men who were in a gang which raped and abused girls in Bristol UK have been jailed for up to 11 years.

Four teenage girls were abused by the men, who are of Somali heritage, Bristol Crown Court was told.

Victims were told it was part of the men’s “culture and tradition” and “men always have sex with each other’s girlfriends”.
