Poverty is a major factor in child prostitution and the sexual exploitation of children. Village children innocent are lured into the sex trade when the family migrates from rural poverty to urban slums.
PREDA's preventive strategy is to contribute to the strengthening of village economies by developing cooperatives, helping small farmers and starting handicraft industries.
Young people in poor farms have a chance for upliftment and avoid having to migrate to city slums through the cooperative and small farmer financial support and marketing project.
With financial and technical assistance mangoes are produced and the fruit is delivered to exporters and factories where just prices are paid.
PREDA assists through other NGO's to deliver technical assistance and financial services. The project is called Farm-gate to Factory-gate.

It helps the small mango and fruit growers and cooperatives to by-pass the local strata of financiers and fruit buyers and enables them to get market price directly from the processing factory for their medium and small fruit. The factory pays the best price at the insistence of PREDA who buys the dried fruit and markets it, thus providing the farmers with a steady market and interest free finance and fair prices. |
Dried mangoes are processed with no preservative or additives.
On the other hand a new development is that farm-gate selling price have risen because of the competition. The availability of direct access to the exporter and the factory forces the wholesale buyer to increase their offers for the mango harvest.
Either way being debt free and now having created a sellers' market the farmers prosper. Their children stay on the farm and can afford to go to school.
Environmental Impact
The demand for mangoes is growing and it encourages the farmers to plant trees on barren hillsides thus contributing to the environmental restoration and conservation of top soil. The mango groves recreate an ecosystem of their own on once denuded and wasted land.
