Papal turbo-charge: Lay leader renews commitment to serve

alex and cathyMANILA, Jan. 18, 2015 – The feeling of being chosen, set apart to participate in Pope Francis’ Meeting with the Families on Jan. 16, no doubt, reignited many lay leaders’ desire to serve others and the Church.

One of them is Alex Hermoso, the Programme Director of Preda (People’s Recovery, Empowerment and Development Assistance) Human Rights Center, who, together with his wife, Cathy, was inspired by the Holy Father’s message to Filipino families on “dreaming for sons, daughters, and spouses.”

Thousands of lay people flocked to the SM Mall of Asia Arena for the Pope’s Meeting with the Families, Jan. 16, 2015. Cathy is afflicted with Poly Arteritis Nodosa, a non-contagious rare disease described as “Rosary Beads” of nodes that blocks the major arteries.

According to Hermoso, who works with abused and trafficked young people, being part of the pontiff’s Meeting with the Families was “an enormous opportunity.”

“[Participating in the event helped me] frame my mind and spirit to the shared vision, mission and objectives to work for family integration. It will inspire me more to work with the family apostolate,” he explained.

Recharged

Being selected for the close encounter with the Holy Father recharged his spirit to serve the Church.

Hermoso personally responded to the call of Pope Francis for family integration by writing a proposal to conduct more activities to strengthen families, “being the integral part and pillars of Christian doctrine.”

Working with dysfunctional families, he facilitates reconciliation in families where domestic and child abuse has happened.

Holy Spirit at work

Originally, Hermoso hoped to get close to Pope Francis during his visit to Tacloban; he feels blessed, however to have been chosen to represent their parish, San Roque at the Subic Bay Freeport Zone.

“My wife, Cathy and I feel blessed for the honor and privilege to have been chosen to be the delegates to the encounter of Pope Francis with families,” he stressed.

Hermoso and his wife believe that it was the Holy Spirit working when their parish priest, Fr. Audie Mozo asked if they would want to be part of the Meeting with the Families after his wife, Cathy, donated rosaries for the survivors of super typhoon Yolanda.

He added that as a lay leader it is fitting for him to attend the family encounter with the Pope and to listen to his message of hope for the families, as well as to pray that all his family members will share the same mission of service to God. (Vanessa M. Puno/CBCPNews)
