Community College are continuing to forge their links with Fr. Shay
Cullen and his children’s charity PREDA. The renowned Dublin born
singer Damien Dempsey has long been an admirer of the work of Fr.
Shay Cullen and his staff at PREDA. When presented with a copy of
the acclaimed biography of Fr. Cullen the talented musician sought
out a representative of PREDA in Galway to offer his support “in
whatever way was thought best”.
Despite his hectic schedule promoting his latest album “To Hell or Barbados” Damien enjoyed a working lunch in a Dublin hotel recently meeting the man he describes as being “a personal hero”. The men are inextricably linked through their efforts to eradicate modern slavery in its various forms- one through music and the other through legal means.
Dempsey seeks no publicity from his partnership with PREDA but only hopes that whatever assistance he can lend will benefit those whose lives have been consumed by malevolent forces. The passion reflected in his music is equally palpable when he discusses issues relating to the protection of children and social justice.
Fr. Shay will be flying from a conference in Chile to attend the event. The support acts will be provided by the Galway Community College Post Leaving Cert (P.L.C.) Music class as well as bands from NUIG and GMIT. Fr. Shay and Damien will be meeting with students from the aforementioned educational bodies which are supporting our work and media during their stay in Galway.
The official launch of PREDA Galway will take place at 8pm on the evening of the 29th February. This will give the people of Galway the opportunity to join this progressive and dynamic charity which will meet on a regular basis in the Western Hotel in Prospect Hill. The hotel has been fantastic in its support of PREDA over the last few years and will be the official meeting place for PREDA Galway in future. Fr. Shay will talk briefly about his work. The visit of Fr. Shay is being made into a documentary by members of the PLC Film Production class from Galway Community College and will premiered later in the year.
Despite having various international accolades bestowed and the
plaudits of celebrities and politicians alike upon him Fr. Shay and
his team need practical support that translates into accommodation
for children or justice against a corrupt official or a custodial
sentence for a convicted paedophile. Damien recognising this fact
and despite having dozens of gigs in the last number of months
across the globe he was very quick to offer his services for the
Galway Community College initiative without hesitation.
Fr. Cullen, himself a musician of note, is delighted to have such an
influential member of the Irish music scene as an ally in the fight
against child imprisonment and prostitution. He described him as a,
“musician in tune with the needs and problems of Ireland today”.
Whatever funds and publicity that may come of this exciting
partnership is much needed as PREDA are desperately trying to
accommodate the growing number of children that have been
emancipated from prison or freed from a life of sexual servitude.
The building of the new boy¹s facility is nearing completion with a
similar project being planned for a girls facility.
Those at PREDA are glad to have him fighting on their side in a fight that can be won. This fight is being won due the audacity of people from every walk of life helping PREDA in various ways in the belief that evil will not triumph over innocence and that collectively a change is going to come.
Tickets for the “The End Child Slavery” PREDA benefit concert headlined by Damien Dempsey in The Warwick at 8pm on Thursday the 28th of February are currently on sale at the ticket office in the Townhall theatre, Róisín Dubh and from Redlight records.
The launch of PREDA Galway will take place in the Western Hotel in Prospect Hill on Friday the 29th of February at 8pm. All are welcome and donations will be taken at the event with copies of Fr. Shay Cullen’s highly acclaimed autobiography “Power and Passion” for sale on the night.
