To celebrate the bicentenary of the abolition of slavery, the University of Eseex's Human Rights Centre will give a presentation on the struggle to combat modern forms of slavery.
Organised by the university's Gregorian Society Justice & Peace Forum, the February 28 event will focus on the reality of combating human trafficking and poverty and the job of eradicating them though fair trade.
Speakers will include co-founder and director of PREDA, and Universe Columnist, Fr Shay Cullen, as well as founder of Jubilee Action Danny Smith and representative from Anti-Slavery International.
Event organizer Peter Donnelly said: "As Christians, Catholics and perhaps fundamentally as human beings created in the image and likeness of God, we have a duty never to surrender to darkness.
"Rather, we have a duty so be sources of light and hope for our often dark and despairing world. We have our part to play and we can and musk make a difference.
“Evil thrives because good people fail to act to stop it. Evil is thwarted by the action of the good.
“We hope that this event will challenge and inspire people to work in solidarity to defeat these evils.”
He added: The examples of these men and their organizations show that it is possible to do something to fight what is most evil and protect what is most precious.
“Fr Shay’s work helping to restore childhood to child’s victims of sexual exploitation shows the extent to which it really is possible to bring someone from being almost dead inside to being fully alive again.”
