Human Greed is destroying the Planet

Violence and it’s direct result of death, mass graves, hunger, hundreds of thousands of refugees crossing deserts suffering indescribable all reflected in the fly infested faces of body bloated child refugees are the common images on the news channels these days.

Who is interested to watch, listen and respond to the terrible news of yet another devastating tragedy in Haiti or Honduras where massive storms and hurricanes have flooded and devastated the islands? All of this is the result of human greed, power grabbing and the exploitation of people, land and above all, oil. That’s the root of the problem in the Sudan, greed for oil. No one knows for sure what western nations are behind the Sudanese government in their efforts to control the oil rich deserts of Western Sudan and grab the oil wealth for their selves. But it is part of the underlying cause of conflict there.

Besides the unbelievable agony of the millions of African people raped, murdered, infected with HIV-AIDS, and driven to the edge of survival, there is another massive price that we pay for the oil based wealth making machine of modern economies - climate warming.

Yes, we drive smoke belching vehicles by the millions polluting the air causing asthma and cancer to untold millions of sufferers. Our industrial economies churn out billions of useless manufactured products that have little or no useful purpose but are items to trade, adorn, admire, play with, possess, and are then discarded for another product putting the planet at risk.

To keep up the endless cycle of useless production the masters of merchandise burn the earth’s oil and coal to generate steam, drive turbines, generate electricity, turn motors and run machines; All with the predictable results of pumping millions of tons of carbon dioxide, methane and other gasses into the atmosphere.

They cause the melting of the polar caps, contribute to the rising levels of the oceans, dilute the warm ocean currents, upset the planets entire climate balance so that the North faces an ice age and the Southern hemisphere will be a great desert. The Massive hurricanes in the Caribbean are already convincing proof of this. The Sahara and Gobi deserts are already advancing quickly. Sand storm particles are reaching as far a Greenland contributing to the breaking up of the ice shelf too. How terrible is the consequence of the greed of human kind?

This is the way the beauty and magnificent balance of creation is being thrown out of kilter. Not by an act of nature but by human brainpower. The evolution of the human brain seems to be creation’s greatest achievement, yet is our species, endowed with free choice, running amok? Is it fast becoming the most deadly killer species ever to roam the earth since the killer dinosaurs were wiped out 200,000 million years ago?

Are we humans devouring ourselves and becoming a monster that is consuming the very planet that produced and nurtured our evolution? Is this what the creator set in motion? Did the Creation, the cosmos, the universe, the cradle of life, so desire to be admired and freely loved that it allowed free will to evolve? Was that a gigantic mistake of the creation itself?

How indeed can there be so much disparity and inequality in a so- called modern, advanced and enlightened western world? This is a world guided supposedly by the values, principles, justice and compassion as taught by Jesus Christ over two thousand years of history. Easy, they have been largely ignored. The EU is a secular society and most ignore its Christian values because it has been corrupted and compromised by those sworn to practice and promote them.

True enough, yet the real principles and practice of Christ, if truly implemented, can still change the world and turn it away from injustice and exploitation. It is possible only if those who have the faith can persuade those with the power to implement them. Not only do we need brain power but spiritual commitment. [End]
