Victory Against Overhead Transmission Lines

ON DEC. 8, 1999, the Inquirer published a letter of Fr. Shay Cullen about the danger of radiation from power lines.

For three years now, we, the residents of Mataas na Bayan, Mogpog, Marinduque, have been opposition to the decision of the National Power Corporation to install high-voltage transmission lines across a populated residential area of our town. our complaints has fallen on deaf ears and we almost gave up our fight until we saw the letter of Father Cullen.

Who would have thought that his letter in the Inquirer would give the local residents of Mataas na Bayan renewed courage to fight the giant Napocor? And fight we did once more, starting with a protest rally on Jan. 13, which was followed by a massive information campaign. Our mini "people power" alarmed Napocor officials and prompted local officials to suspend the transmission line installation project.

Thanks to that letter which talked about the danger posed by overhead high-voltage transmission lines, the Napocor is now negotiating with us for the possible relocation site, away from the residential area.--JOHN GARCIA, Mataas na Bayan, Mogpog, Marinduque
